Giovanni Fonio continues his good run of form at the Tenerife Challenger, securing his third consecutive victory after coming through the qualifiers. The 26-year-old Italian defeated Arthur Reymond of France in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to book his spot in the second round. His next challenge will be a significant one, as he faces former Top 10 player Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain on Wednesday.

“I’m happy with how I played. From the second set onwards, I changed my approach, and I’m glad to be back on court tomorrow,” said Fonio, who acknowledged the challenge ahead against Carreno Busta.

“Everyone knows how good he is. He’s a former Top 10 player, and I don’t think I’ve ever played against someone of his level before. I can’t wait.”

Despite the immediate test in Tenerife, Fonio is also focusing on his long-term goals:

“My ranking has dropped a bit, and I definitely want to improve it. I don’t have a specific ranking target, but I want to compete at a high level,” said the World No. 397.

The day also brought success for Spanish tennis, with three home players advancing to the next round. Nicolas Alvarez Varona, a qualifier, won an all-Spanish battle against Daniel Rincon 6-2, 6-4, while Pol Martin Tiffon staged a comeback against Argentina’s Pedro Cachin, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Javier Barranco Cosano also recovered from a poor start to defeat eighth seed Lukas Neumayer from Austria 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
