After a solid opening-round victory over Italy’s Federico Arnaboldi, Pablo Carreno Busta continued his good run of form on Wednesday by eliminating Italian qualifier Giovanni Fonio 6-4, 6-2 to book his spot in the quarterfinals of the Tenerife Challenger.

Carreno Busta, a two-time US Open semifinalist, saved the only break point he faced and capitalized on four of his own 10 break-point opportunities in one hour and eight minutes.

“I played a great match, and I felt even better on the court than in my first round,” Carreno Busta said after his second-round win. “When I’m physically fit, I enjoy myself, and even though I don’t have a specific goal, I want to win every match and leave Tenerife with as many points as possible.”

Currently ranked World No. 149, Carreno Busta is looking to climb back up the rankings and make another push toward the ATP Tour’s elite level. Helping fuel his motivation this week are two special supporters in the stands: his parents.

“It’s always special when they are watching. During the season, I don’t get to see them often, so I’m happy they are here with me. Hopefully, I made my mother suffer a little less today compared to my first-round match,” the Spaniard joked.

Up next for Carreno Busta will be either Spanish qualifier Nicolas Alvarez Varona or No. 6 seed Vilius Gaubas of Lithuania. The 33-year-old Gijon native is seeking his first title since winning the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal 2022.
