Home favourite Luciano Darderi has booked his place in the semi-finals of the Napoli Tennis Cup. The top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court event defeated Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4 on Friday.
Darderi struck six aces and won 79 per cent of his first-service points. The World No. 61 broke the 39-year-old’s serve three times to seal victory in one hour and 19 minutes.
Darderi will next take on Dalibor Svcina from the Czech Republic, who eased past Murkel Dellien of Bolivia 6-1, 6-3 in one hour and 21 minutes.
In the bottom half of the draw, Andrea Pellegrino rallied from a set down to outlast Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-3. The Italian qualifier withstood 11 aces and won two points more than his opponent to prevail after two hours and 51 minutes.
Up next for Pellegrino will be Vit Kopriva. The 27-year-old Czech also had to go the distance, fighting past Italy’s Federico Arnaboldi 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 35 minutes.
