Cilic Clinches Eurofirms Girona Challenger Crown

Marin Cilic has clinched his first ATP Challenger Tour title since 2007. The 36-year-old Croatian lifted the trophy of the Eurofirms Girona – Costa Brava after winning Sunday’s singles final 6-3, 6-4 against Elmer Moller of Denmark.

The unseeded Cilic advanced to the championship match of the clay-court tournament in Catalonia with wins in the top half of the draw over Carlos Taberner of Spain, top-seeded Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, No. 6 seed Pablo Carreno Busta from Spain and fourth favourite Jesper de Jong of the Netherlands.

The World No. 143, who reached a career-high of World No. 3 in 2018, struck eight aces in the final and won 73 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in one hour and 43 minutes.

By winning his third ATP Challenger Tour career crown – in addition to his 21 tour-level titles – Cilic earned €20,630 in prize money as well as 100 ATP Ranking points.

The third edition of the Eurofirms Girona – Costa Brava offered a total prize pool of €145,250 and was hosted by the Club Tennis Girona.
