HOUSTON/STARNBERG, April 2, 2025
Tuesday’s action at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston saw several notable performances, with winners securing their spots in the second round. A strong contingent of US-American players made their mark, as ten of them reached the second round, the highest number at River Oaks since 2022.
Among the standout performances was Japanese star Kei Nishikori, a former top-five player and 2011 U.S. Clay finalist. Making his first appearance in Houston since his runner-up finish 14 years ago, Nishikori returned in style, winning his opening-round match against qualifier Mitchell Krueger.
Meanwhile, rising US-American talent Ethan Quinn delivered a breakthrough performance. The 21-year-old recorded his first career win over a top-50 opponent, defeating No. 6 seed Jordan Thompson. It was also Quinn’s debut ATP Tour clay-court victory, further solidifying his potential. The former University of Georgia standout, who won the 2023 NCAA singles championship, continues to show promise as he transitions to the professional circuit.
