HAMBURG, June 25, 2016
The Davis Cup is truly hanging like a sword of Damocles over the ATP tournaments, taking place the same week of 11 July: The Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport and the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad. Also affected is the German Open in Hamburg, which welcomes 32 singles players on clay court.
Good news have come from the best ranked player, who entered the ATP 500 event. Dominic Thiem will play at the Rothenbaum Tennis Center, skipping Austria’s Group I Davis Cup tie against the Ukraine. The world number eight is expected to be tournament’s top seed.
The picture is different with the players from Argentina, who entered the list. Juan Mónaco, Hamburg’s 2012 champion, Federico Delbonis, who finished runner-up in 2013, as well as Guido Pella have been picked by captain Daniel Orsanic for Argentina’s Davis Cup squad. The trio will be joined by Juan Martin Del Potro, who did not enter the tournament in Germany. 2014 champion Leonardo Mayer will return to Hamburg. The South Americans will face Italy and consequently another personal issue for the German Open remains unsolved, as 2013 winner Fabio Fognini is also part of the acceptance list.
Here is the official acceptance list:
