TORONTO, July 18, 2016
Tennis Canada announced Monday that world No. 2 Andy Murray has withdrawn from Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto.
A three-time Rogers Cup champion, this will be the first time he hasn’t played the Canadian event since his first appearance in 2006.
“I always look forward to coming to Canada and it’s the first time I’ve missed the tournament, the guys there do a great job and always look after the players,” said Murray. “My body needs some recovery time after reaching the latter stages of tournaments over the past few months. I’m sorry to my fans in Toronto but I look forward to being back in Canada next year.”
“Andy has been very loyal to our event over the years, but certainly we are disappointed he has chosen not to be in Toronto this year,” said Karl Hale, Rogers Cup Toronto tournament director. “As a Masters 1000 event, we are one of the most important tournaments on the calendar. Andy is one of the very top players in the world and a fan favourite. He will be missed but we wish him continued success through the balance of the season.”
The 2016 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank will take place from July 23-31 at Aviva Centre in Toronto.
