Sixteen-year-old US-American Michael Antonius made history on Sunday by winning his first pro singles title at the Bakersfield Tennis Open, an USTA Pro Circuit M25-level tournament in Bakersfield, Calif. He beat his 26-year-old compatriot Andrew Fenty, 7-6(3), 6-2, to become the youngest player to win a men’s singles title on the global ITF World Tennis Tour since July 2014 and the youngest US-American to win a men’s singles title on the ITF Pro Circuit since records began in 1990.

He surpasses the previous mark held by Rhyne Williams, who won a Futures title in 2007 at 16 years and 108 days. The achievement also makes Antonius the youngest player worldwide to claim such a title since South Korea’s Lee Duckhee, who triumphed in Hong Kong in July 2014 at 16 years and 45 days.

This breakthrough comes in only the fifth professional tournament of Antonius’s career. Prior to this victory, his best results were quarterfinal finishes at M15 Rochester in July 2025 and M15 Naples, Florida earlier this year – both impressive showings for a player still transitioning from the junior circuit.

The title is expected to propel Antonius inside the Top 1000 of the ATP rankings for the first time when the next update is released on Monday, March 30. He currently sits at a career-high No. 1378, with further gains dependent on results elsewhere.

Already a standout at junior level, Antonius has reached a career-high junior ranking of No. 11. He claimed back-to-back ITF World Tennis Tour J300 titles earlier this season in Barranquilla and Salinas, underlining his consistency and potential on the international stage.

In addition to his individual success, Antonius was part of the United States team that won the 2025 Junior Davis Cup, alongside Andrew Johnson and Jordan Lee. The team secured a 2-0 victory over Japan in the final, further highlighting the depth of emerging US-American talent.

Antonius, a Buffalo, N.Y., native, joins fellow US-American 16-year-old Andy Johnson in achieving a significant age-related benchmark with his first pro singles title. Last month, Johnson won his first pro title at an M15-level event in Sunrise, Fla., and became the youngest player since Carlos Alcaraz to win an ITF circuit singles title.
