MORELIA/STARNBERG, March 29, 2026
Croatia’s Borna Gojo has etched his name into the history of tennis in Michoacan, Mexico by winning the 2026 edition of the Morelia Open. In the final held at Estadio Tres Marias, the eighth seed asserted his authority on hard courts with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Argentina’s Juan Pablo Ficovich. The match, which lasted one hour and 32 minutes, was a display of power, composure, and precision from the Croatian.
The opening set was a tightly contested battle dominated by strong serving from both players, ultimately decided in a tense tie-break. Gojo showed greater composure in the key moments to edge it 7-6(5). Carrying that momentum into the second set, he elevated his level, breaking Ficovich’s serve at crucial stages and closing out the match convincingly 6-2.
After securing the trophy, the 28-year-old Split native reflected on the challenge of the final and the significance of the victory.

“It was a very difficult match. Juan is a great opponent, but today the weather was a challenge for both of us, and in the end, I managed to close it out with my serve. This victory means a lot to me. The past two years have been very difficult after a back injury, but today I’ve won the biggest title of my career and I’m very grateful to Morelia and Mexico for the past few weeks,” he said.
This triumph confirms Gojo’s outstanding form in 2026, particularly on Mexican soil. It marks his second title in the country this year, following his victory at the ATP Challenger in Metepec in February. The win also reinforces his reputation as a hard-court specialist, as all four of his Challenger titles have come on fast surfaces, adding to his previous successes in Ortisei in 2022 and Sioux Falls in 2024.
Gojo capped off a dominant week in Morelia, dropping just one set throughout the tournament – against Quinn Vandecasteele in the round of 16 – and demonstrating excellent adaptation to the altitude conditions in the region. With the 125 ATP Ranking points earned, he climbs 12 places in the world rankings, moving from No. 151 to No. 139 with a total of 453 points.
The second edition of the Morelia Open offered a total prize pool of $225,000 and was hosted by the Club de Golf Tres Marias. Morelia is one of Mexico’s most charming and culturally rich cities, known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and vibrant atmosphere. As the capital of the state of Michoacan, it is famous for its pink stone buildings, historic landmarks, and lively plazas, with the iconic Morelia Cathedral standing as a centerpiece of the city.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Morelia blends history with modern life, offering a strong cultural scene that includes festivals, music, and gastronomy. Its pleasant climate, welcoming atmosphere, and growing presence in international events – such as the Morelia Open – make it an increasingly popular destination for both tourists and sports enthusiasts.
