It was a landmark day for Brazilian tennis as Eduarda Gomes and Leonardo Storck captured the titles at the Roland-Garros Junior Series by Renault in Sao Paulo, earning coveted spots at the junior event of Roland Garros in Paris.
At just 13 years old, Gomes became the youngest champion in the tournament’s history, showcasing remarkable composure in a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over fellow Brazilian Maria Eduarda Carbone. After trailing 1-4 in the opening set, she fought back to claim the tie-break and carried that momentum through the second set in front of a packed crowd at the Sociedade Harmonia de Tenis.
“I knew I was the youngest, but I also believed I could beat anyone,” Gomes said, highlighting the confidence that fueled her run. A motivational message written by her father and coach on her racquet – “I can do all things”—served as a constant source of inspiration throughout the week.
The boys’ final saw 17-year-old Storck produce an impressive comeback to defeat Colombia’s Juan Miguel Bolivar 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. After a nervy start, the Brazilian raised his level significantly, crediting his mental strength and the support of the crowd for turning the match around.
“I felt the nerves early on, but I relaxed in the second set and changed my attitude,” Storck said. “This title shows how strong I am mentally.”
