The ATP Challenger Tour is back in Kazakhstan this week, bringing consecutive tournaments to Shymkent, one of the country’s oldest and most dynamic cities. Known for its warm climate, lively bazaars and a blend of modern development with deep-rooted Central Asian culture, Shymkent provides a unique backdrop on the professional tennis circuit. Its growing reputation as a sporting destination continues to strengthen with events like these.

Both tournaments will be played on clay at the National Tennis Center Beeline Arena, offering a total prize pool of $63,000 each. The winner of each event will earn 50 ATP Ranking points, making these tournaments a valuable opportunity for players seeking to climb the rankings during the spring season.

The Shymkent Challenger is back after a hiatus of four years but it has built a solid history in recent years. In 2022, two editions were staged, with Sergey Fomin defeating Robin Haase 7-6(4), 6-3 in the second event, while Emilio Nava claimed the first title by overcoming Sebastian Fanselow 6-4, 7-6(3).

After cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tournament’s earlier editions remain part of its identity. In 2019, Andrej Martin captured both titles, beating Stefano Travaglia and Dmitri Popko in the finals. In 2018, Yannick Hanfmann triumphed over Roberto Cid Subervi, having been runner-up the year before to Ricardas Berankis.

This year’s top seed is home favourite Timofey Skatov, who trying to become the first Kazakh to lift the trophy here. With a mix of emerging talents and experienced contenders expected to compete, the return to Shymkent promises another exciting chapter in the tournament’s story, as players battle on clay for titles, points and momentum.
