LEXINGTON, July 26, 2016

Great Britain’s Brydan Klein shined under the lights at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center on Monday night, defeating Kentucky-born Eric Quigley (USA) in the nightcap’s main featured match, 6-2, 6-4, putting a close to the first day of main draw play at the $50,000 Kentucky Bank Championships.

Klein dropped an early break in the first set to Quigley to fall behind 1-0, but then broke right back in Quigley’s first service game to level the first set, and would cruise to a first set win, 6-2. After eight consecutive holds to begin the second set, Klein broke for 5-4 in the frame and served out the final game at love to claim his spot in the second round of the men’s singles main draw.

Also on Monday, former Kentucky Wildcat Jesse Witten (USA) grabbed one of four qualifying spots up for grabs with a very convincing 6-4, 6-1 win over Australia’s Marinko Matosevic. Witten will play his first round singles match on Tuesday against Daniel Nguyen (USA) on the main stadium court at the Boone Tennis Center.

 The longest match of the day was the first one on court this morning on court one, as the top seed in the women’s qualifying draw, Lauren Robson (GBR) survived a three-set, three-hour match against wild card Kat Facey (USA) 6-0, 6-7 (1), 6-4. Robson broke Facey at 5-4 in the third set to claim the win, and a spot in the second round of the qualifying draw.

Tuesday’s night session will feature three Kentucky Wildcats in it, beginning with Witten teaming up with current player Beck Pennington (UK) to play doubles against Sekou Bangoura (USA) and Jose Statham (NZL) to open play on the main courts no earlier than 7 p.m. ET. Following that will be another current Wildcat, the United States’ William Bushamuka, playing in his first ATP Tour event against Liam Broady (GBR) on the main court.

Also in action tomorrow is USA Olympian, Brian Baker, who faces Daniel Evans (GBR) at approximately 3 p.m. ET on court one, and Laura Robson on the women’s side, who will open play on court two against Alison Bai (AUS) for a spot in the main draw.
