The quarterfinals are set at the €64,000 Open Castilla y León Challenger held at Villa de El Espinar. Top seed Nicolas Almagro booked his spot in the stage of the final eight with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over fellow Spaniard Ricardo Villacorta-Alonso. The world number 46 from Murcia smashed 13 aces, winning 89% of his first service points to advance in one hour and 16 minutes.
“I am still adjusting to the conditions but I am very pleased with my performance today,” Almagro told.
Almagro will collide with Mirza Basic. The 25-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Michal Konecny 6-4, 6-3. Basic landed 68% of his first serves and didn’t face a break point to finish the encounter in 62 minutes.
Adrian Menendez Maceiras knocked out the tournament’s number two Lukas Rosol, winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. The world number 228 from Spain withstood 17 aces, saved all three break points he faced, converting three of his own to seal victory in two hours and 17 minutes.
“I am very a happy with the match and my level of tennis. I enjoyed it out there today,” the 2014 finalist said.
Menendez Maceiras will next take on Marton Fucsovics. The eighth favourite from Hungary eased past Aldin Sektic 6-2, 6-2, firing 10 aces in only 54 minutes.
