The second day of first-round action at the Moldova Open took place on Tuesday under warm but once again very windy conditions at the National Tennis Center in Chisinau.

Estonia’s Daniil Glinka delivered a solid performance to secure a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 victory over Serbian qualifier Stefan Latinovic, advancing to the second round of the ATP Challenger 100 tournament. The No. 4 seed capitalized on four of his five break-point chances and won 60 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 13 minutes.

“Conditions were tough today due to wind. You needed to be focused all the time,” Glinka told Tennis TourTalk afterwards.

“The complex they have built here is awesome. My father is from Moldova. I am really that they have been able to accomplish something like this. Five years ago I couldn’t imagine something like this. I am enjoying it a lot. I have been coming here every summer since I was a kid. Our family has a house in the northern part of Moldova. It is kind of a second home to me.”

The world No. 175 will next take on Briton Liam Broady, who beat Brazilian qualifier Daniel Dutra da Silva 6-3, 6-0 in 69 minutes.

In other action, Kimmer Coppejans knocked out top seed Francesco Maestrelli of Italy 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4. The 32-year-old Belgian capitalized on eight of his 17 break-point opportunities to prevail after three hours and 20 minutes, the longest match of the day. Up next for Coppejans will be Italian Franco Agamenone.

In the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 seed Zdenek Kolar defeated local wild card entry Ilya Snitari 6-4, 6-3 to book his spot in the second round of the clay-court tournament. The world No. 162 broke his opponent four times to succeed in one hour and 41 minutes. Kolar will next take on India’s Sumit Nagal.

The main highlight of the day for Moldovan fans was the performance of Radu Albot. Moldova’s top-ranked player began his home tournament campaign in convincing fashion, advancing to the second round after defeating Maxime Janvier. Albot had taken the opening set 6-3 before the match was cut short due to an injury sustained by the Frenchman.
