Luca Nardi headlined Wednesday’s second-round action at the Moldova Open by battling past fellow Italian Lorenzo Giustino in a dramatic three-set encounter. The No. 3 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 100 event in Chisinau prevailed 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4 after a marathon contest at the brand new National Tennis Center.

On a hot afternoon with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, Nardi broke serve seven times and won 53 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in three hours and 32 minutes.

“The club is very nice here. It’s nice to see that they built such a nice environment,” Nardi said about the brand-new tennis complex in Chisinau. “Unfortunately, I haven’t had too much time to visit the city yet, but normally I go out with my team for dinner. We often try different restaurants to experience different types of food.”

The 22-year-old from Pesaro will next face Argentina’s Genaro Alberto Olivieri, who defeated fifth-seeded Swede Elias Ymer 6-2, 7-6(5) in one hour and 57 minutes.

Elsewhere, Stefanos Sakellaridis advanced after Spanish qualifier Alex Martinez retired with the Greek leading 7-6(2), 2-0 due to an abdominal injury.

Sakellaridis will now take on India’s Sumit Nagal, who produced one of the biggest wins of the day by eliminating second seed Zdenek Kolar of the Czech Republic 6-4, 7-6(4) in a match lasting two hours and three minutes.
