LONDON, June 17, 2026 (ATP Media Release)
The ATP has partnered with leading global publisher Phaidon to launch ATP No. 1 Club: Icons of Men’s Tennis, a definitive celebration of the 29 players to have reached World No. 1 in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings.
Created in collaboration with the ATP, the book brings together the stories, rivalries and defining moments of the sport’s most exclusive group. The premium, photo-led book represents an important element of the ATP No. 1 Club initiative, designed to celebrate, honour and promote the 29 icons of the game who have reached the pinnacle of the sport.
The ATP No. 1 Club: Icons of Men’s Tennis features a foreword by Rod Laver and a preface by ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi. It also includes text by the late, award-winning writer Mark Hodgkinson, whose work on the book, completed before his passing, reflects his enduring passion for tennis and one of the sport’s foremost storytellers.
Organised chronologically, from Ilie Năstase to Jannik Sinner, the ATP No. 1 Club presents in-depth profiles of each World No. 1, paired with more than 300 archival images capturing defining moments across five decades. Each chapter opens with a detailed player overview, including career milestones, weeks at No. 1 and the year they first reached the summit.
Iconic imagery features throughout the book, from historic rivalries to generational moments, illustrating the evolution of the sport through athletes who have shaped its global appeal.
Since the introduction of the ATP Rankings in 1973, the sport has had a singular benchmark for greatness: World No. 1. Across more than five decades, only 29 players have reached that milestone, each earning their place in one of the most exclusive clubs in professional sport, the ATP No. 1 Club.
Commenting on the launch of the book, ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said: “Reaching World No. 1 represents the highest level of sustained excellence in our sport. ATP No. 1 Club is a celebration of the players who have defined different eras of men’s professional tennis and inspired generations of fans around the world. It reflects not only their achievements but the evolution of the game from the 1970s until the present day.”
Blending on-court achievements with behind-the-scenes and off-court moments, the book offers a visual timeline of men’s tennis at its highest level, highlighting the individual contributions that continue to shape the modern game.
Reflecting the significance of the players it celebrates, ATP No. 1 Club is presented in a bold blue case featuring a tennis ball-inspired die cut, revealing a signature flash of tennis-ball green that continues throughout the design of the book.
The book will be available globally in November 2026 and is available to pre-order now on atptourstore.com and phaidon.com
