SANTA PONCA/STARNBERG, June 21, 2026
The main draw of the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships got underway on Sunday with a high-quality opening day of tennis at the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponça. Portugal’s Nuno Borges and Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego were the first players to secure their places in the last 16, while all eyes are already on Monday’s schedule and the long-awaited debut of Nick Kyrgios.
Borges was given the honour of opening the main draw and delivered an impressive performance, defeating eighth seed Adrian Mannarino of France 6-2, 6-2. The Portuguese player controlled the match from the baseline with consistency and confidence, breaking serve in the opening game and maintaining his advantage throughout the contest. After losing in the first round on his only previous appearance in Mallorca, Borges earned his first victory at the tournament and will now face either Martin Landaluce or Jan-Lennard Struff in the round of 16.
The match between Mariano Navone and Lorenzo Sonego provided a much closer battle. The Italian claimed a tightly contested opening set in a tie-break before Navone responded strongly, taking the second set 6-2 to level the match. Sonego, however, remained composed in the deciding moments and secured a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 victory after a hard-fought encounter. He will next meet the winner of the match between Miomir Kecmanovic and Hamad Medjedovic.
Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann also booked his place in the last 16 after overcoming Paraguay’s Adolfo Vallejo. The match was decided by two closely fought tie-breaks, with Hanfmann prevailing 7-6, 7-6. His next opponent will be top seed Luciano Darderi of Italy.
“It was close and physically very demanding today. I am happy to have won in straight sets,” Hanfmann said. “I played a couple of times against Darderi and lost. This time we play on grass, which will hopefully help. I have a day off tomorrow, trying to recharge the batteries for Tuesday.”
