GRANBY, August 6, 2016

Denis Shapovalov’s strong run at the $100,000 ATP Challenger in Granby was ended in the quarterfinals on Friday by US-American Sekou Bangoura, who emerged victorious 6-4, 6-3. Bangoura broke Shapovalov’s serve four times in the match and lost his serve just once. He also defeated Félix Auger-Aliassime earlier this week.

He will meet Marcelo Arevalo for a place in the final. The 25-year-old from El Salvador defeated Mitchell Krueger 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 33 minutes.

Frances Tiafoe, who eased past Andrew Whittington 6-0, 7-6 and Japanese qualifier Yasutaka Uchiyama, who beat James McGee 7-6, 6-1, complete the final four.

Wozniak Advances To Semi-Finals

Aleksandra Wozniak went up against former junior World No. 1 An Sophie Mestach of Belgium. The Canadian got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first set and never looked back en route to a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win thanks to a consistent effort from the back of the court.

“I am very happy with my performance today, it was probably my best match of the week,” Wozniak said. “Yesterday, I went away in the second set, but today I was solid from start to finish.”

Wozniak, currently ranked no. 457 in the world, will play her first semifinal since 2012 on Saturday against US-American Jennifer Brady.

Francoise Abanda was unable to join her compatriot in the semifinals after falling 6-0, 6-1 against Olga Govortsova of Belarus in under an hour. Govortsova avenges the defeat she suffered at the hands of Abanda in Fed Cup this past February. The former world no. 35 will face American Melanie Oudin in the other women’s semifinal.
