The ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria Maspalomas 2026 completed its opening-round action on Wednesday, producing a compelling day of high-quality tennis and setting the stage for an exciting round of 16. Among the players progressing were second seed Dominica Salkova, fifth seed Arantxa Rus and former World No. 36 Nadia Podoroska, while only three Spaniards remain in the singles draw.
Three-time tournament champion Arantxa Rus delighted the fans on Centre Court with a composed performance against Spain’s Ane Mintegi. The experienced Dutchwoman, aiming to lift a fourth title in Gran Canaria, controlled the match from the outset and secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska also lived up to expectations. The former Roland Garros semifinalist showcased her powerful baseline game to defeat France’s Sara Cakarevic 6-4, 6-0, booking her place in the last 16 in convincing fashion.
The day’s most dramatic encounter featured second seed Dominica Salkova. The Czech player dropped a closely contested opening set 4-6 against Croatia’s Lea Boskovic before responding emphatically, storming through the second set 6-0. Boskovic regained her rhythm in the decider, but Salkova held her nerve to complete a hard-fought 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 comeback victory.
Another memorable contest saw two qualifiers battle for nearly three hours. Finland’s Laura Hietaranta eventually edged past Dutch qualifier Demi Tran 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 after a thrilling three-set encounter to continue her impressive run.
Elsewhere, Czech Anna Siskova eliminated Spain’s Meritxell Teixido 6-1, 6-1, Brazil’s Laura Pigossi defeated Slovakia’s Polona Hercog 6-1, 6-3, and Malta’s Francesca Curmi cruised past Portugal’s Francisca Jorge with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Following the defeats of Meritxell Teixido and Ane Mintegi, only three Spanish players remain in the singles draw: fourth seed Andrea Lazaro, Maria Garcia Cid and Carmen Gallardo.
