Two German players have booked their places in the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger 75 at the Hamburg Ladies & Gents Cup, with local favourite Marvin Moeller producing the comeback of the day at the Rothenbaum Tennis Complex.
Moeller battled past eighth-seeded Italian Raul Brancaccio (ATP No. 237) in a dramatic three-hour encounter, recovering from a break down in the deciding set and saving two match points before eventually prevailing 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-6(4).
“Today was all about staying in the match and continuing to fight. I did that really well,” Moeller said after his marathon victory.
The 27-year-old Hamburg native has now reached the stage of the last eight of a Challenger in his home city for the first time. Playing on a court he knows particularly well made the victory even more special.
“It’s always something special to play on this court and at this venue. Reaching the quarterfinals of a Challenger is always a good achievement and shows that I’m on the right track. I’m looking forward to playing more matches here.”
Moeller will face fellow German Niels McDonald in Friday’s quarterfinal. The 18-year-old continued his impressive run by overcoming Brazil’s Eduardo Ribeiro (ATP No. 372) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Court M1.
The Hamburg native will have a day off on Thursday before returning to action. “I’ll get some sleep, eat well and then do a little training to prepare for the next match,” Moeller said.
For Max Schoenhaus, however, the tournament came to an end in the second round. The 22-year-old German was beaten by Brazil’s Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida (ATP No. 277), who produced a dominant performance under the lights on Centre Court to win 6-1, 6-3 in just 66 minutes.
The second round of the Hamburg Ladies & Gents Cup will conclude on Thursday, with play getting underway at 10:30 a.m. Admission is free.
