The top seed of the €42,500 Tilia Slovenia Open, Florian Mayer, advanced to the quarterfinals on a rain delayed Wednesday in Portoroz, beating Aldin Setkic 6-4, 6-3. The world number 94 from Germany capitalized on five of his eight break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 12 minutes.

Mayer will next play Adrian Menendez-Maceiras. The 30-year-old Spaniard defeated Miljan Zekic 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 17 minutes.

In the toughest fight of the day, second favourite Renzo Olivo battled past Blaz Rola 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. Both player lost their serve two times, Rola even won three points more than the 21-year-old Argentine but in the end Olivo saved five match points to prevail in three hours and eight minutes. He will next face seventh seed Alexander Kudryavtsev.

Grega Zemlja is the last Slovenian player standing. The 29-year-old fourth seed edged past Yannick Mertens 6-4, 6-2. Zemlja didn’t face a break point, converting three of his own to advance in 62 minutes. Next up will be Marko Tepavac, who took out Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 6-4.

Daniil Medvedev knocked out the tournament’s number three Jozef Kovalik, winning 6-3, 6-3. The world number 171 from Russia sent down four aces and won 76% of his first service points to finish the encounter in exactly one hour of play. Medvedev will next face Marton Fucsovics. The sixth seed from Hungary rallied back from a set down to overcome Blaz Kavcic 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 52 minutes.
