The 2026 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals got underway Tuesday evening in the major, high-tech global metropolis of Shenzhen, China, located in south-central Guangdong Province. The opening quarterfinal matched Czechia against Great Britain. No strangers to team competition, these two European nations were meeting for the eighth time.

Boasting an extremely strong team, the 11-time champion Czechs had beaten the British in each of their four most recent meetings. By the end of the evening, some five-and-one-half hours after it began, Czechia had increased their winning streak against Great Britain to five straight.
Czechia won both of its singles matches to secure a 2-0 victory over Great Britain, which advanced the Czechs to the semifinals for the first time since 2023, and eliminated the British, who had been semifinalists in three of the past four years.
Leading the charge for Czechia was World No. 6 Linda Noskova, who defeated British No. 1 Katie Boulter, ranked 54th, 6-2, 7-6 (3), in one hour and 39 minutes to clinch the tie. The Czech No. 1 dominated Boulter by striking 15 aces and winning 78 percent (36 of 46) of her first-serve points. Noskova faced no break points on her serve and converted two of six break-point chances. She outpointed Boulter 76-63.

In the opening match, Czechia’s No. 2 Maria Bouzkov went the distance to beat Great Britain’s No. 2 Sonay Kartal, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4, in two hours and 59 minutes. The 26th-ranked Bouzkova converted four of nine break points, including in the final game to win. She outpointed No. 121 Kartal 115-108.

“I’m super happy [with the win],” Bouzkova said during her team’s news conference. “It was really important, obviously [a]really important point. Yeah, I’m just proud.
“More than anything, so happy to be part of this team. They pushed me forward. It was a team effort. Super happy we pulled this one through all together.”
With Bouzkova giving the Czechs a 1-0 lead, it was up to Noskova to clinch the tie and lift the Czechs into the semifinal round – and she did just that. Noskova jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Boulter in the opening set and never really faltered after that.

With an insurmountable 2-0 lead for the Czechs, the doubles match between Katerina Siniakova and Karolina Muchova against Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage was not played.
“The first match is never easy, no matter what,” Noskova said during her on-court interview. “I was surprised by the way I played in the first set. Obviously, the second set was tougher and Katie served really well. She didn’t give me many chances. I had to use anything that I had in the tie-break and it worked. I’m happy.”
Noskova and Bouzkova are part of a very deep and talented Czech team that includes two players ranked in the Top 10 and two others in the Top 30. Sara Bejlek, ranked 28th, and the doubles pair of Katerina Siniakova and Karolina Muchova, each whom can also play singles, round out the Czech squad. Bouzkova said she only found out earlier Tuesday that she would play No. 2 singles in the team’s quarterfinal opener.
“Obviously, whatever the team decides, I’m here for the team for whatever needs to be done on my side,” Bouzkova said. “Just really honored that I could play today.
“Yeah, that’s what this competition is about, making all decisions as a team and finding our way through as team.”

Czechia team captain Barbora Strykova, a former Czech BJK Cup player between 2002-18, said she was pleased with her team’s shutout victory over the British.
“It feels great to have a team like I have,” Strykova said during an on-court interview. “It’s amazing. I feel privileged to have such players next to me and to be sitting with them on the bench to cheer them on. It feels incredible.”
Meanwhile, Great Britain team captain Anne Keothavong said of Boulter and Kartal: “For both these players, it required their absolute best and a bit of luck for the result to go our way. I can’t fault their efforts. I think the Czechs are the strongest team here. I’d be surprised if they don’t go on to win this competition.”
In Friday’s semifinal round Czechia will face the winner of Wednesday’s quarterfinal-round match between Spain and Kazakhstan.
