Seventh seed Denis Shapovalov became the first player through to the Chengdu Open quarterfinals after producing a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic on Friday.

The Canadian broke twice in the opening set before racing into a 3-0 lead in the second. Kopriva responded by winning the next three games, including Shapovalov’s only dropped service game of the match, but the former World No. 10 quickly regained control and reeled off three consecutive games to seal the victory.

Shapovalov converted four of his six break-point opportunities and delivered an impressive serving display, winning 23 of 25 points behind his first serve.

“I’m definitely very happy. It was an almost perfect match for me, with just a little hiccup in the second set,” said Shapovalov. “I was playing and serving almost perfectly, and it’s very hard to maintain that throughout a match. But I did well to bounce back and continued to play solidly.”

French veteran Adrian Mannarino continued his strong run in Chengdu by ousting defending champion and third seed Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.

Mannarino struck 10 aces, won 81 per cent of the points behind his first serve and saved all three break points he faced. Two of those came as the 38-year-old served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, having broken Tabilo in the previous game. The Chilean raced to a 40-15 lead, but Mannarino held firm to force deuce before converting his second match point to reach his third ATP Tour quarterfinal of the season.

“It was a tight match. I felt that we were both serving pretty well, and the winner was going to be the one who could produce a good return at the right moment,” said Mannarino. “The second set became really tight, but I’m happy that I was able to maintain my concentration all the way through. Sometimes you get frustrated and lose your clarity, but today I was able to stick to my game. That was the most important thing.”

Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili continued his fine run of form with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over fourth seed Botic van de Zandschulp, reaching his first ATP Tour quarter-final of the season and his first since advancing to the same stage in Chengdu last year.

The 34-year-old former World No. 16 has yet to drop a set across four matches in Chengdu and has faced just one break point throughout his run. He was once again imperious on serve today, striking eight aces and not facing a single break point, while converting two of the five opportunities he created.

“I’m feeling very good. I like this court. I played well here last year and found my game, and this year feels the same,” said Basilashvili. “The conditions probably suit my game. I feel comfortable and I’m really enjoying playing here.”

In the only other singles second-round match contested on Friday, US-American Jenson Brooksby recovered from a set down to defeat Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 and book his third ATP Tour quarterfinal appearance of the season.
