Alexander Zverev secured Team Europe’s sixth Laver Cup title with a straight-sets victory over Learner Tien on the final day at London’s O2 Arena.

The reigning US Open champion bounced back from his disappointing defeat to Team World’s Alex de Minaur on day two, overcoming Tien 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to put Europe over the line.

Carlos Alcaraz had kept Team Europe’s hopes alive with a crucial victory earlier in the competition, before Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik defeated de Minaur and Taylor Fritz in the doubles to put Europe within touching distance of the title.

Zverev then completed the job with his win over Tien, taking Europe’s overall tally to the 13 points required to lift the trophy. As a result, Alcaraz was not required to return to court.

“I haven’t won a Laver Cup match in two years, so I’m happy I did it today,” said Zverev.

“Massive credit to the entire Team World. They pushed us all the way again, they were champions last year. We have a great team chemistry, it was a team effort.

“Winning as a team, there’s no better feeling in sports. We don’t have enough of it in tennis.”
