The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) has appointed Marc Lopez as the new captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team, with the 44-year-old set to take over from David Ferrer on January 1, 2027. The Barcelona native has signed a three-year term running through 2029, following Ferrer’s decision to step down at the end of the current season.

Before assuming his new role, Lopez will continue working as Ferrer’s assistant coach at the Davis Cup Final 8, scheduled to take place in Bologna, Italy, from November 24 to 29. He has been part of the Spanish coaching staff since the 2025 Qualifier against Denmark in Marbella.

Lopez retired from professional tennis in May 2022, having established himself as one of the most successful Spanish doubles players of his generation. He reached a career-high ranking of world No. 3, won a Grand Slam title, an Olympic gold medal and the ATP Finals.

His breakthrough came in 2012 when he partnered Marcel Granollers to win the ATP World Tour Finals in London, becoming only the second Spanish pairing to lift the doubles trophy after Manuel Orantes and Juan Gisbert in 1975.

The highlight of his career followed in 2016. Alongside Feliciano Lopez, he captured the Roland Garros doubles title before achieving Olympic glory a few months later. Partnering his close friend Rafael Nadal, he won the gold medal at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Lopez also reached three further Grand Slam finals, twice alongside Granollers at Roland Garros and the US Open in 2014, and once with Feliciano Lopez at the US Open in 2017.

His connection with the Spanish national team dates back to 2012, when he made his Davis Cup debut. He went on to contest 13 ties for Spain, including the final in the centenary edition of the competition during his debut year.

Now, Lopez is set to begin a new chapter in Spanish tennis, taking on the responsibility of leading the national team through the 2027, 2028 and 2029 seasons.
