VILLA MARIA/STARNBERG, November 8, 2026
Juan Manuel La Serna brought the curtain down on a record-breaking season of ATP Challenger tennis in Argentina by winning the AAT Challenger IEB+ Villa Maria at the Sport Social Club. The 22-year-old delivered an impressive performance in Sunday’s final, defeating fellow Argentine Genaro Olivieri 6-2, 6-3 to claim his second ATP Challenger title.
Despite the pressure of playing in front of a packed stadium, La Serna showed remarkable composure and maturity. The Catamarcan-born player, who developed his game in Córdoba, produced an aggressive display from the outset, taking the initiative with his groundstrokes and consistently looking to dictate the rallies. His confidence grew as the match progressed, resulting in an almost flawless performance.

“I came onto the court highly motivated and full of energy. I could feel the crowd supporting me all the way. My friends, family and coaches from when I was a child were all there. In situations like this, I raise my level,” La Serna said.
The victory was particularly special as it marked his second Challenger title on home soil in the province where he developed as a player. In May, he had claimed the first title of his career at the Córdoba Lawn Tennis Club.
“It seems there is something special about this place. I feel comfortable here, I like the conditions and I feel very confident. That was clearly reflected in my performance,” he added.
Melbourne calling: La Serna achieves another career milestone
The final in Villa Maria carried significance beyond the title itself. Both finalists knew that winning the tournament would put them in a strong position to secure a place in the qualifying draw of the Australian Open in January.
La Serna made the most of the opportunities provided by the Challenger events in his home country throughout the season. His consistent results helped him climb into the world’s top 215, putting him on course for his Grand Slam debut in Melbourne.
“I still can’t believe it. It’s incredible where tennis can take you. We have been working so hard with the team, and getting the chance to play in these tournaments is a real reward,” he said.
“It was something I had in mind when I started playing juniors. When I reached the junior Grand Slams, I told myself that I would start building towards playing the Grand Slams at professional level. The goal is to make it into the main draw. For now, we are only talking about qualifying. It’s one step at a time, and the journey continues.”
La Serna also highlighted the importance of financial support in helping him develop his professional career. He was one of the recipients of the 2025 Galperin Merit Scholarship, awarded to the second-best Argentine player aged 22 or under in terms of ATP Ranking points earned at tournaments in Argentina during the previous season. The scholarship provided him with US$40,000 to finance his 2026 campaign and enabled him to compete more regularly abroad.
“I haven’t checked my phone yet, but he sent me a message yesterday congratulating me on reaching the final. We are always in contact, and he is a great guy. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence, but the support has helped Lauti (Midon) and me relax mentally and focus on our tennis,” La Serna explained.
“It’s a tremendous help, and I am always grateful to him and to the Argentine Tennis Association for launching and continuing this initiative. I wouldn’t be surprised if the players receiving the scholarship this year benefit in the same way. It’s a wonderful programme for us as tennis players.”
A record-breaking year for Challenger tennis in Argentina
The tournament in Villa María marked the conclusion of an unprecedented season for the ATP Challenger Tour in Argentina, with eight events held across the country, six of them organised by the Argentine Tennis Association (AAT). All eight titles were won by players born in Argentina.
The season began in January with Franco Agamenone, who represents Italy internationally, winning at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. In February, Guido Justo and Facundo Díaz Acosta triumphed in Tigre, while Camilo Ugo Carabelli claimed the title in Rosario. La Serna then won in Cordoba in May, Luciano Ambrogi followed in Tucumán in June, and Alex Barrena lifted the trophy in Buenos Aires in September.
