CINCINNATI, August 20, 2016

The top seed of the Western & Southern Open Andy Murray highlighted Friday’s quarterfinals in Cincinnati. The world number two beat Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-4, hitting 10 aces and extended his career-best winning streak to 21 after one hour and 18 minutes.

“When the important moments came I felt like I served well when I was behind, and then as soon as I had my chance on my serve I capitalised on them,” Murray said. “That was the difference. I just played the bigger points better tonight.”

Murray will next play the tournament’s number four Milos Raonic. The 25-year-old Canadian edged past Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4. Raonic didn’t face a break point, converting two of his own to advance in only 68 minutes.

“I’ve practiced with him many times, so to some extent I have an understanding of his game, like he has of mine,” Raonic said. “But it’s different come match time, so I did a little bit of studying. I feel like I took that all in and adapted well. I’ve definitely watched plenty of his matches, especially throughout this year, because he’s been playing well. He’s been there in the latter stages of each and every tournament.”

Grigor Dimitrov continues his impressive run with a confident 7-6, 6-2 win over Steve Johnson. After saving one set point in the opening frame, the 25-year-old Bulgarian closed out the match on his serve at the first attempt. The encounter lasted one hour and 25 minutes.

“As soon as I came out to play that second set, I felt a little bit more relaxed and a little bit more confident,” said Dimitrov. “I was looking more for his serve and waiting in a different spot, so that helped a lot.”

Next up for Dimitrov will be Marin Cilic. The 12th seed advanced when NextGen star Borna Coric retired due to a knee injury after dropping the first set 6-2. Cilic leads their head to head rivalry 2-1, appearing in his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final in the 71st attempt.
