VIENNA, October 4, 2016

The city of Vienna will play host to the second edition of the Tie Break Tens, a new quick-fire, short-format of tennis in which only tie-breaks are played. Six players will battle it out in a three-hour evening session on Sunday, October 23, to kick off the Erste Bank Open 500.

In the grand arena of Wiener Stadthalle, world number 11 Dominic Thiem, 2008 Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic and two time Halle Gerry Weber Open champion Tommy Haas, plus two players to be announced will go head-to-head in a round-robin format for a winner-take-all prize of $250,000. Former world number one Thomas Muster will act as the tournament director.

“To have Tie Break Tens in Vienna is fantastic. Tie-breaks make for some of the most exciting moments in tennis, so a tournament of tie-breaks all in one evening is going to be great,” Thiem said.

The six-man field will be drawn into two groups of three players, with each match contested over a first-to-ten point tie-break (with a margin of two). The top two players in each group will go through to the semifinals, and then the final.

Last December, at the inaugural Tie Break Tens event at the Royal Albert Hall in London, rising NextGen star Kyle Edmund defeated fellow Brit Andy Murray in the final to take away the prize purse – more money than he had won throughout the whole 2015 season.

“Players as well as the fans were amazed by the format last year,” Erste Bank Open tournament director Herwig Straka told. “I am sure that it won’t be different in Vienna, as the spectators can cheer on the six players at this entertaining format. With the Tie Break Tens, we will celebrate a big opening ceremony on the first Sunday of the ATP event.”
