Sunday at the Go&Fun Open in San Marino with only one match left to play – the singles final between Adrian Ungur and Antonio Veic. The latter, who had to battle through the qualifying has never been able to gain a victory against the Romanian. Both players met last time at an ATP Challenger event in Barranquilla earlier this year, where the Croat at least won a set.

The final took place in pleasant temperatures in the evening hours under floodlight and Ungur was in control right from the beginning. The 29-year-old broke serve in the second and fourth game and it lasted 21 minutes until Veic made it on the scoreboard. Four minutes later in the seventh game, the Romanian closed the opening set out through a nice backhand drop shot winner.

The second frame began like the first when the 26-year-old Croat lost his service again. Another break should follow in the third game when Veic double faulted for the fourth time. The world number 313, just produced too many unforced errors and another forehand cross court too long led to the third service loss in a row. In the following, Ungur served out to seal victory in only 50 minutes winning 6-1, 6-0. The Romanian took his eighth ATP Challenger trophy and seemed to be very satisfied afterwards.

“I think Antonio was a little bit tired from yesterday’s match and the whole week. Nonetheless, I played very solid today with making less errors than normal and I was also a bit lucky in the important points, which was the key to success,” Ungur said. “With this victory, physically I feel good. You recover faster than usual, which is normal when you win. I’m prepared for the next tasks, so tomorrow morning I’ll go on to Cordenons but before I think I’ll have a bit of celebration in Rimini tonight,” the Romanian told.

“I was a little bit tired and exhausted. I had to play seven matches before today’s final. The biggest problem, however, was Adrian. I just don’t like his game. He played unbelievable today. He didn’t give me any time with my shots and he deserved this victory,” Veic admitted and will also leave for Cordenons on Monday.
