BRATISLAVA, November 13, 2016
Seventh seed Cristina-Andreea Mitu is the champion of the $25,000 ITF Womens Slovak Indoor 2016, upsetting the tournament’s number one Denisa Allertova of the Czech Republic in Sunday’s final 6-2, 6-3.
The women’s title match took place right after the end of the men’s ATP Challenger final inside the Aegon Arena in Bratislava.
The 25-year-old from Romania was in control right from the beginning, sending down six aces as well as winning 73 per cent of her first service points. Mitu finished the encounter after one hour and seven minutes.
“It was an amazing week, as I haven’t won a tournament in a big while,” a obviously relieved Mitu told Tennis TourTalk afterwards.
The world number 268 lifted her last trophy in Campinas in 2015. “I am really happy, as this is almost the last tournament of the year, which was really tough for me. I changed my team. I have a new coach and we also have some friends here.”
Mitu has started to work with Victor Crivoi in September this year. The former world No. 68 is on her way back to climb up the rankings again.
“I have started to focus more on tennis. I realized what I was doing wrong. I will probably finish the season with another tournament in Dubai but I will also have some days off for sure, as I am going home to Bucharest now,” she told.
“After that we will start with the pre-season and the goal for 2017 will be to get back to the Top 100.”
