Canada Starts With Win At Fed Cup

MONTREAL, February 8, 2017

Team Canada started round robin play with a 2-1 win over Venezuela on Tuesday at the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group I event being held in Metepec, Mexico until February 11.

Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (Mississauga, Ontario), Canada’s no. 1 singles player for the tournament, came through to erase a 0-1 deficit after Charlotte Robillard-Millette (Blainville, QC) was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Adriana Perez. In her Fed Cup debut, Andreescu, 16, followed up with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over world no. 447 Andrea Gamiz in 75 minutes after being down a break in the opening set.

The decisive doubles rubber went the way of Andreescu and Robillard-Millette who teamed up to beat Gamiz and Perez 6-3, 6-1 in just 51 minutes. Canada will face Bolivia and Paraguay to finish the round robin portion of the competition. The winner of Pool A will meet the winner of Pool B for a place in the World Group II playoffs in April.

On Wednesday, the Canadians will go up against Bolivia who were defeated 3-0 by Paraguay.
