MONTREAL, February 10, 2017

Team Canada contested their final round robin tie against Paraguay on Thursday at the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group I event in Metepec, Mexico.

Both teams were undefeated heading into the tie and a place in Saturday’s final was on the line. Canada earned that spot thanks to a 3-0 win over Paraguay.  Katherine Sebov (Toronto, ON), who made her Fed Cup debut on Wednesday, was once again chosen to be the no. 2 singles player by captain Sylvain Bruneau. The 18-year-old comfortably secured the first point for her team following a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Montserrat Gonzalez.

Sixteeen-year-old Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (Mississauga, ON), ranked no. 293 in the world, booked Canada’s place in the final on the strength of an impressive 6-1, 6-1 triumph over world no. 125 Veronica Cepede Royg in just 46 minutes. She completed the sweep alongside Charlotte Robillard-Millette (Blainville, QC) in doubles. The pair defeated Cepede Royg and Camila Giangreco Campiz 6-0, 6-4.

Canada will now get a day off before facing the team that finishes atop Pool B, composed of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, in the final. The winner of that tie will earn a place in the World Group II playoffs in April.
