BUENOS AIRES, February 19, 2017

Alexandr Dolgopolov defeated top seed Kei Nishikori from Japan 7-6, 6-4 to win the Argentina Open presentado por Buenos Aires Ciudad on Sunday.

The 28-year-old from the Ukraine saved all of the three break points he faced, converting one of his own to seal victory in one hour and 40 minutes.

Dolgopolov didn’t drop a set all week, taking out second seed Pablo Cuevas in the second-round and fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta in the semi-finals.

“I think you can call it a perfect week. I didn’t lose a set here and beat Kei for the first time. The fans were really supporting me and I felt very welcome here,” Dologopolov told after claiming his third ATP World Tour singles title and first since Washington, D.C. in 2012.

The World No. 66 from Kiev arrived in Buenos Aires having lost 10 of his last 11 matches. Dogopolov earns $97,470 in prize money as well as 250 ATP ranking points.

Nishikori finishes the week as the first Asian-born man to reach the Argentina Open final.

“I’m happy to be in the final. Unfortunately I lost today, but Alex played better than me. I didn’t play badly, so hopefully I can keep this level going,” Nishikori told.

Colombians Take Doubles Title

Top seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah from Colombia cruised past Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and Spaniard David Marrero 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the doubles title. The encounter lasted exactly one hour of play.

“It’s great to repeat here. We love Buenos Aires. The city, the stadium here and the food too,” Cabal told.

“We had a pretty difficult draw but arrived playing well. We showed that and we hope to maintain it for the rest of the year. Our expectations for 2017 are very high. We want to fight for Grand Slam and Masters 1000 titles, and the goal is to qualify for the ATP Finals at the end of the year,” Farah added.
