Jürgen Melzer captured the singles title of the €85,000 Wroclaw Open, winning Sunday’s final inside a packed Hala Orbita against local favourite Michal Przysiezny 6-4, 6-3.

In the pair’s first meeting, the eighth seed from Austria withstood 11 aces, hitting five of his own and converted four of his eight break point chances to prevail in one hour and seven minutes.

Przysiezny was the first player from Poland to reach the final in Wroclaw. “Thank you all for coming,” the runner-up told afterwards. “I couldn’t take the title, as my opponent was just too good today. Nonetheless, this week has been my best within the last two, maybe even three years. I am looking forward to more such performances and a quick return to the Top 100.”

Melzer lifted his fifth trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour, his second of the season, following his triumph in Budapest in last month. The World No. 203 takes away €12,250 in prize money as well as 100 ATP Ranking points.

“I am very pleased with this title here,” Melzer was happy. “It wasn’t an easy match today, as Michal served really well.”

Adil Shamasdin from Canada and Andrei Vasilevski of Belarus fought past Russian Mikhail Elgin and Denys Molchanov from the Ukraine 6-3, 3-6, 21-19 to clinch the doubles title. The encounter lasted one hour and 28 minutes.
