SHERBROOKE, March 8, 2017

Three of the six Canadians in action on Tuesday advanced to the second round at the $25,000 Subaru Sherbrooke Futures presented by Énergie 106.1, held at the Christian Bourque indoor tennis courts of the Rock Forest Recreation Centre in Sherbrooke.

In the biggest upset of the day, local favourite Brayden Schnur from Ontario ousted the tournament’s sixth seed, Daniel Altmaier of Germany. Despite his opponent tallying fives aces and only two double faults, the Canadian was able to convert on his chances, particularly in the first set. Schnur was broken early in the second set, but managed to break back and hold serve to take back control of the match. In a contest that lasted over an hour and a half, the Canadian defeated his opponent by a score of 6-3, 7-6(3).

Philip Bester from Vancouver and Pavel Krainik from Toronto faced off in an all-Canadian matchup, which saw the experienced Bester defeat the young wildcard recipient Krainik 6-3, 6-2. 22-year-old Washi Gervais was the third Canadian player to lose in the first round, falling to the US-American Qualifier Ryan Shane in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime was also in action, playing a first-round doubles match with French partner Gleb Sakharov against the finalists of the 2017 Gatineau Futures, Gregoire Barrere and Laurent Lokoli of France. The pair of Auger-Aliassime and Sakharov fell to the French duo, losing 6-4, 6-3. Auger-Aliassime will be in action on Wednesday, taking on the US-American Nathaniel Lammons.

On Wednesday, Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill will headline the evening session. He was eliminated in the first round of last year’s tournament and will be looking to build off of his impressive victory last week at the Gatineau Futures.
