GUADALAJARA, March 27, 2017

Mirza Basic is the champion of the $50,000 Jalisco Open presentado por Aeromexico held at the Polideportivo Metropolitano de Tenis in Guadalajara. The 25-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina won Sunday’s final 6-4, 6-4, snapping a nine-match winning streak in Challengers of Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov, who had captured his maiden title last week on home soil in Drummondville.

Basic withstood 12 aces, hitting four of his own and saved all of the five break point he faced. The World No. 214 from Sarajevo broke serve two times to prevail after one hour and 11 minutes.

“The last title I had was in July 2015, so I’m very happy to be back and making some wins. I really enjoyed my time here. I knew it was going to be a tough match because Denis is young and up-and-coming, but I think I was solid and more patient than him today,” Basic told after lifting his second trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour, following his triumph in Recanati.

Earlier the day, local favourite Santiago Gonzalez and Artem Sitak from New Zealand clinched the doubles title. The second seeds fought past the all-Australian-combination of Luke Saville and John-Patrick Smith, winning 6-3, 1-6, 10-5. The final lasted exactly one hour of play.
