De Greef And Bedene Keep Verrazzano Open Title Hopes Alive

The quarterfinals of the inaugural €64,000 Verrazzano Open, held at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy, are set. Fourth seed Aljaz Bedene defeated Serbian qualifier Filip Krajinovic 6-4, 7-6 on Thursday. The World No. 93 from Great Britain fired 13 aces, winning 71 per cent of his first service points to advance in one hour and 41 minutes.

Bedene will next take on Mathias Bourgue. The Frenchman saved all of the three break points he faced, converting two of his own to overcome seventh favourite Norbert Gombos from Slovakia 6-3, 6-4.

The tournament’s number eight Arthur de Greef battled past Stefano Napolitano of Italy 6-4, 5-7, 7-6. The 25-year-old from Belgium capitalized on seven of his 15 break point chances to seal victory in two hours and 48 minutes.

De Greef will play another Italian in the stage of the final eight, facing Marco Cecchinato. The 24-year-old from Palermo beat Uladzimir Ignatik from Belarus 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 14 minutes.
