Andrej Martin has returned to the tour following a prolonged absence out with illness to clinch his first ATP Challenger trophy since 2015. The 27-year-old from Slovakia defeated Adrian Menendez-Maceiras of Spain 7-5, 6-4 in Sunday’s final of the $50,000 San Luis Open.

Martin won 73 per cent of his first service points and broke serve three times to seal victory in one hour and 56 minutes. The fifth seed, who beat the tournament’s number one Facundo Bagnis en-route to the title, takes away $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP ranking points.

“I had to deal with some health problems at the beginning of the year, so I am really happy to play five matches in a row again,” Martin told after clinching his seventh ATP Challenger career title.

“This was my first tournament after the rest. Winning the tournament is a great start again. I like the conditions here with the altitude. I moved well and played solid matches, which was the key to win the tournament. Obviously winning gives you confidence, hopefully I continue to play this good tennis and keep physically well.”

Later the day, Roberto Quiroz from Colombia and Brazilian Caio Zampieri took the doubles title, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Hans Hach Verdugo of Mexico and Spaniard Adrian Menendez-Maceiras. The encounter lasted 56 minutes.
