SANTA PONSA, May 13, 2017
The organizers of the WTA Mallorca Open announced Friday the line-up for the grass court tournament’s second edition held from 17 to 25 June 2017 at the Santa Ponsa Tennis Club.
Top ranked player will be World No. 16 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from Russia, who captured two titles this season lifting the trophies in Monterrey and Rabat.
Canadian Eugenie Bouchard will also come to Mallorca. The 23-year-old enjoyed a successful run during this week’s Mutua Madrid Open, knocking out Maria Sharapova and top seed Angelique Kerber before she was stopped by Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals.
“I am really looking forward to the tournament. I feel comfortable playing on grass,” told Bouchard, who won Wimbledon’s juniors crowns in singles and doubles in 2012. Two years later she advanced to the women’s final of the Grand Slam event, falling to Petra Kvitova.
Five players from Germany will also come to the Spanish island, which counts about 30,000 German residents. Stuttgart champion Laura Siegemund, Mona Barthel, Julia Görges, Annika Beck and Andrea Petkovic will be part of the line-up.
Tournament director will be Toni Nadal. “I am very proud to be the tournament director at my home tournament in Mallorca. After the great success of the inaugural edition, the event will have a great future,” the star coach told.
