LONDON, May 25, 2017 (Press Release)
Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans will join the strongest line-up in the history of the Aegon Championships after being awarded wild cards into the tournament at The Queens Club, 19th-25th June.
World No.50 Edmund, and current No. 55 Evans have made significant strides over the past year, with Edmund reaching quarterfinals in Brisbane and Delray Beach, and taking a set off Rafael Nadal on clay. Evans reached the Sydney final and the last 16 of the Australian Open.
They will join a star-studded line-up that includes 3 of the world’s Top 4 – World No.1 Andy Murray, 14-time Grand Slam title winner Nadal, and reigning US Open champion Stan Wawrinka. Last year’s runner-up Milos Raonic, World No.8 Marin Cilic, 2014 champion Grigor Dimitrov, Juan Martin Del Potro, Nick Kyrgios and Jo Wilfried Tsonga have also entered.
At the Aegon Championships last year, Edmund reached the quarterfinals after registering a big win over Gilles Simon. He eventually went down in three sets to Murray. Evans won two good matches in 2013 to reach Round 3 before losing out to Del Potro.
Edmund said: “This is an opportunity for me to take on some of the best players in the world in a home tournament and I’m really looking forward to it. Reaching the quarterfinals and taking a set off Andy was a great experience and I’m very grateful for the wild card this year.”
Evans said: “I nearly made it on my ranking, which is my goal long-term, but missed out because the tournament is so strong. Grass is a good surface for me, it’s great of the tournament to have given me a wild card into it, and now I just want to put my game on the court and see how far it takes me.”
Stephen Farrow, Aegon Championships Tournament Director, said: “Kyle and Dan missed out on the main draw cut by only a handful of places and they have posted some excellent results over the past 12 months. We are delighted to give them the chance to take on so many of the best players in the world at The Queen’s Club.”
Tara McGregor-Woodhams, Head of Brand and Sponsorship Aegon UK at Aegon, added: “It is great news that two further British players have been added to a stunning line-up that includes Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and so many other top players. We are all looking forward to the start of the Aegon Championships.”
