GENEVA, May 27, 2017

Stan Wawrinka successfully defended his Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open crown, claiming his 16th tour-level title with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Mischa Zverev in Saturday’s final.

The top seed from Switzerland, who enterd the main draw with a wild card, won 54 per cent of the total points play, breaking the German’s serve five time to seal victory after two hours and 20 minutes.

Wawrinka, who was born in nearby Lausanne, improved to 9-1 in his home tournament, having also prevailed last year with a win over Marin Cilic.

“I’m extremely happy to win my second title in Switzerland. It means a lot to me. This is the first time that my daughter is in the stadium when I win the title and that makes it even more special,” the World No. 3 said, clinching is first title since lifting the trophy at the US Open last year.

Zverev was appearing in his first ATP World Tour final since finishing runner-up in Metz in 2010. He won six matches in seven days as a qualifier, highlighted by a semi-final victory over second seed Kei Nishikori.

“It was a great week for me here‎ in Geneva. Playing on clay is usually not easy for me, but I really felt great here playing six matches this week and reaching my first semi-final and final on this surface. Congratulations to Stan for a good week and a great match today,” Zverev told.

Rojer/Tecau Triumph

Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau saved one match point to claim their 14th team title. The top seeds fought past the Colombian tandem of Juan Sebatian Cabal and Robert Farah, rallying 2-6, 7-6, 10-6 in one hour and  minutes.

The victory gives the Dutch-Romanian duo their second title of the season, having previously triumphed on the hard courts of Dubai in February. It marks the fourth straight season in which they have claimed multiple crowns.

“It was a really tough match. Robert and Sebas were playing well the whole week. They played better today for the majority of the match and this time we got a little lucky after going down match point. We’re very happy with the win and it gives us a lot of confidence going into the French Open,” Rojer told.

“It’s always fun to play in front of a nice crowd and it’s a big week for us. It’s another title and we’re going to enjoy it with our team. Our first time coming here, but we’re looking forward to coming back,” Tecau added.
