PARIS, June 11, 2017

Rafael Nadal wins a 10th Roland Garros title having lost just 35 games and didn’t even drop a set all tournament. The 31-year-old Spaniard defeated Stan Wawrinka in Sunday’s final 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

Nadal was in total control and never let the Swiss into the encounter. The fifth seed saved the only break point he faced, converting six of his own to secure victory in two hours and five minutes.

The Mallorca resident has now closed back to within three of Roger Federer’s all-time record with a 15th Grand Slam title, said in halting French: “It’s truly amazing.

“This final to win La Decima for me is very, very special. It’s very emotional for me.”

Nadal took his record at Roland Garros to 79-2 after winning his 10th straight final in the French capital. Switching to English, he continued: “The feeling I have here is impossible to describe.

“The nerves, the adrenaline that I feel when I play in this court is impossible to compare. It’s the most important tournament in my career and to win again is something I can’t describe.”

Nadal will rise to No. 2 in the Emirates ATP Rankings for the first time since October 2014. He’ll receive 2,000 Emirates ATP Rankings points and €2,100,000 in prize money.

“There are many things I can talk about the game, about what I did, about what he was doing, that I should have done or tried differently, but in the end of the day, I think it’s quite clear the score,” Wawrinka had to admit.

“Nothing to say about today, Rafa was too good. What he is doing in our sport is amazing. To play against him is an honour.”
