MARBURG, July 6, 2017

Yannick Hanfmann headlined Wednesday’s second round action at the €43,000 Marburg Open, knocking out the tournament’s number one and #NextGenATP star Casper Ruud from Norway 6-4, 7-6.

The 25-year-old German sent down six aces, winning 86 per cent of his first service points to advance after one hour and 17 minutes without facing a break point.

By reaching the quarterfinals, Hanfmann backs up his decent results of the season. The World No. 173 advanced to the stage of the final eight at the BMW Open in Munich and finished runner-up at the ATP Challenger in Shymkent.

Hanfmann will next take on Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, who also practices at the TennisBase Oberhaching. The Poprad-Tatry Challenger champion fought past Calvin Hemery of France, winning 7-6, 7-6. Both players lost their serve once but Stebe won six points more than his opponent and prevailed after two hours and six minutes.

The two Germans will be joined in the quarterfinals by fellow countryman Matthias Bachinger, who rallied from a set down to overcome Oscar Otte 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 45 minutes. The 30-year-old from Munich will next challenge Filip Krajinovic of Serbia, who beat Slovakian Andrej Martin 6-2, 6-4.

“My fitness isn’t ideal yet and there is missing certainity during the matches, but there were improvements in a lot of things,” Martin stated on twitter.

With third favourite Arthur de Greef from Belgium and the tournament’s number six Guillermo Garcia-López, two seeded players are left in the singles draw.
