Sam Querrey defeated reigning Wimbledon champion and No. 1 seed Andy Murray of Great Britain in Wednesday’s quarterfinals of The Championships 3-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 to become the first US-American man to reach a Grand Slam singles semi-final since Andy Roddick advanced to the Wimbledon title match in 2009.

Querrey, seeded 24th at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, will face seventh-seeded Croat Marin Cilic, who beat Gilles Muller in the stage of the final eight, in Friday’s semi-finals.

The 29-year old San Francisco native, who currently lives in Santa Monica, California and is ranked No. 28 in the world has defeated the top seed and defending champion at Wimbledon two years in a row after taking out Novak Djokovic last year in the third round, stopping Djokovic’s 30-match win streak at Grand Slams.
