KITZBÜHEL, July 30, 2017
Miljan Zekic caused the upset of the day at the Generali Open when he knocked off #NextGenATP player Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6, 7-6 on Sunday to qualify for the main draw of the ATP 250 event.
The 29-year-old from Serbia won five points more than his young opponent from Greece to prevail after one hour and 39 minutes. Zekic will play his second ATP main draw match in Kitzbühel after he had also qualified for the opening round of the Croatia Open in Umag last week, in which he fell to Radu Albot from Moldova in straight sets. This time, the World No. 328 will challenge Russian Andrey Kuznetsov.
Santiago Giraldo also made it into the main draw. The 29-year-old from Colombia beat Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia 7-5, 6-4 to face two time Kitzbühel champion Robin Haase of the Netherlands.
Giraldo will be joined by Germany’s Maximilian Marterer, who defeated the last Austrian standing in the qualifying Michael Linzer 7-5, 6-4 as well as Facundo Bagnis. The Argentine ousted Thiago Monteiro of Brazil 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to take on Philipp Kohlschreiber. Marterer will play Serbian Dusan Lajovic.
