Munar Upsets Granollers To Reach The Semi-Final At El Espinar

Spanish youngster Jaume Munar headlined Friday’s quarterfinal action at the €85,000 Open Castilla y León, held on hard courts at the Villa El Espinar. The #NextGenATP player knocked off the tournament’s number one Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-4.

Munar sent down seven aces, winning 71 per cent of his first service points to advance to his first ATP Challenger semi-final after one hour and 28 minutes.

“This win is really important to me,” Munar was happy afterwards. “Marcel is such a great competitor. It was really difficult today.” 

The 20-year-old from Mallorca will next play Marcel’s younger brother Gerard Granollers. The wild card entry defeated Laurent Lokoli of France 6-4, 6-4. The World No. 525 won 55 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 27 minutes.

Australian teenager Alex de Minaur defeated Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands 7-6, 6-4. The 18-year-old Sydney native saved six of the seven break points he faced, converting two of his own to secure victory in one hour and 47 minutes.

“I love playing in Spain. Fans have been cheering me up since the first round. I really want to thank them for their support throughout the week,” told de Minaur, whose mother is Spanish. He practices and lives in Alicante.

De Minaur will take on fellow #NextGenATP player Matteo Berrettini in the semi-final. The 21-year-old from Italy fought past Aldin Setkic from Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Berrettini fired 22 aces and saved all 10 break points he faced, gaining the decisive break in the final set to prevail after two hours and 46 minutes.

In Saturday’s doubles final Adrian Menendez-Maceiras and Sergiy Stakhovsky will face Roberto Ortega-Olmedo and David Vega Hernandez.
