On the second day of the 30th annual $100,000 Nordic Naturals Challenger presented by Santa Cruz County Bank, Quentin Halys eliminated 18-year-old Norwegian Casper Ruud 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the final match of the day.
The 20-year-old Frenchman was able to put Ruud down a break in the first and third sets which made the difference in the overall match. Halys finished the encounter after one hour and 31 minutes. He will next take on Raymond Sarmiento from the United States.
On court 5, US-American Mackenzie Mcdonald beat Lexington Challenger runner-up John Millman from Australia 6-7, 6-4, 6-0, who won the Nordic Natural Challenger as top-seed in 2015. Mackenzie Mcdonald will play the tournament’s number six Tennys Sandgren from the United States in the second round.
On center court, 19-year-old US-American Taylor Fritz took care of business early in the day against Konstantin Kravchuk of Russia. The #NextGenATP player from California, who entered the main draw with a wild card, sent down six aces and won 73 per cent of his first service points to secure a 6-3, 6-4 victory in one hour and 19 minutes. Fritz will next face fellow US-American Austin Krajicek in the feature match Wednesday.
