MONTREAL, August 13, 2017
The final of the 2017 edition of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank will feature a clash of generations, with 36-year-old Roger Federer taking on 20-year-old Alexander Zverev.
Federer defeated Robin Haase from the Netherlands 6-3, 7-6 in Saturday’s semi-finals. The second seeded Swiss sent down nine aces, winning 87 per cent of his first service points to advance in one hour and 15 minutes.
Zverev ended the dream run of Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, beating the wild card entry 6-4, 7-5. The German youngster capitalized on all of his three break point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 43 minutes and is looking forward to the title match:
“I think Roger’s definitely the favourite,” told Zverev. “He’s been playing amazing tennis. He pretty much won every single big tournament he played this year. I feel like I’m playing well, so I know that I have to serve a lot better tomorrow than I did today. That was I think the thing that I struggled the most with today.
“But, you know, I played in five finals this year. I won four. The one that I lost was against Roger. There’s a reason for it. I’m happy to be in the final. I’ll try to enjoy as much as I can.”
The title match in Montréal will mark the fourth meeting between the two. Federer, who leads their head to head with two wins and one loss, won their most recent meeting at a tournament in Halle, Germany.
Federer, who is on a 16-match winning streak, will be looking to claim his first title in Montreal, after being crowned Rogers Cup champion in 2004 and 2006 in Toronto. The Swiss Maestro is in search of his sixth title of 2017, while Zverev could win his fifth title of the year.
