Two of the three seeds in the top half of the draw advanced to the quarterfinals of the €64,000 Acqua Dolomia Tennis Cup in Cordenons on Tuesday.
The tournament’s number one Laslo Djere defeated Italian Federico Gaio 7-5, 6-2. The World No. 108 from Serbia capitalized on five of his seven break point opportunities to prevail in one hour and 49 minutes.
Next up for Djere will be Enrique López-Pérez from Spain, who recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over Italian wild card entry Lorenzo Sonego. The 26-year-old Madrid native was solid on his serve, winning 85 per cent of his first service points. He saved the only break point he faced, converting two of his own to finish the encounter after one hour and 33 minutes. The World No. 326 will appear in his first quarterfinal on the ATP Challenger Tour since Caltanissetta in June last year.
López-Pérez will be joined in the stage of the final eight by his compatriot and fourth seed Roberto Carballés-Baena. The 24-year-old from Tenerife edged past Polish youngster Kamil Majchrzak 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 20 minute.
Carballés-Baena will next face Goncalo Oliveira of Portugal, who upset Segovia Challenger champion and seventh favourite Jaume Munar from Spain 6-4, 6-2. The World No. 242 from Porto won 58 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 27 minutes.
