NEW YORK, September 2, 2017

Mischa Zverev advanced to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the second time this year. The 30-year-old German knocked off 10th seed John Isner 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 on Arthur Ashe Stadium in Friday’s night session of the US Open.

Zverev withstood 11 aces from the big-serving US-American, hitting five of his own. He broke serve three times to prevail after two hours and six minutes.

“I couldn’t have done anything better today. It was just a very good day for me,” Zverev was pleased with his performance.

Earlier in the year, Mischa reached the stage of the final eight at the Australian Open, where he lost to Roger Federer. Here in New York, Zverev will next face with Sam Querrey the last US-American standing in the singles men’s draw. Querrey launched 49 winners, including 19 aces, to secure a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Radu Albot from Moldova.

Sharapova Into Fourth Round

Also back in late-night action, former World No.1 Maria Sharapova survived a tough test from US-American and fellow-wild card entry Sofia Kenin to reach the fourth round of the US Open for the first time since 2014. The 30-year-old Russian sent down eight aces, winning 72 per cent of her first service points to beat her 12 years younger opponent 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 42 minutes.

“I just keep enjoying it here more and more,” said Sharapova, who will next take on 16th seed Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia.

In her post-match press conference, Sharapova also hit back at Caroline Wozniacki over a scheduling row at Flushing Meadows on Friday, saying of her bitter Danish rival: “I’m in the 4th round. I don’t know where she is.”

Wozniacki was furious that her second round match was played on an outside court while five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova was competing all of hers in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Danish woman lost in the second round against Ekaterina Makarova on Wednesday.
